Vacancies

  1. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at The University of Queensland
This full-time, 2-year postdoctoral fellow position will undertake primary research on the socio-political, cultural and environmental implications of the expansion of high-value horticulture for the contested regional politics of (a) land and development, (b) labour and livelihoods, and (c) natural resources and environmental governance. The project will analyse how incorporation within agricultural global production networks interacts with diverse drivers of multifunctional landscape change in the north-eastern coastal strip region of Australia (from Coffs Harbour to Cairns), and critically consider how pre-existing regional economic, social and environmental factors influence the form of, and tensions around, the development of high-value horticulture. This will contribute to improving pathways to a more sustainable and equitable future for rural regions within Australia, and elsewhere in the world. The role will work closely with researchers located at The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney and James Cook University, as part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant.

Calls

  1. Call for papers/panels/roundtables: POLLEN24 TOWARDS PLURAL AND JUST FUTURES
    When: JUNE 11-13, 2024.
Where: LIMA (PERU), DODOMA (TANZANIA), LUND (SWEDEN)
The unfolding and entwined social-ecological crises make the challenge of how to move towards more plural and just futures more pressing than ever. Political ecology provides an important toolbox to explore the unjust and colonial power relations that condition global flows of material resources, money, ideas and people. Yet, the field itself is shaped by inequalities when it comes to the engagement of researchers from different locations, the distribution of research resources and how different ways of knowing and being are circulated, represented and recognized.
With POLLEN24, we aim to provide a platform to discuss these and other issues by organizing a distributed, yet connected, conference with physical hubs in Peru, Tanzania and Sweden. With its cross-continental format, we seek to facilitate inclusive and participatory exchange on the role of political ecology in nurturing plural and just socio-ecological futures. Deadline for submissions of individual papers, paper-based panels, discussions, art and other creative interventions in collaborations between academics, activists and artists alike, is December 15 2023. For more information about the conference and call for submissions, check the link: https://pollen2024.brick.site
